It's only been 1 week since the Slayers Kickstarter was launched??
I can't believe it. It's been a really wild week since launch, and I thought it would be nice to just write about the experience so far, and give an idea of what's coming up.
When I setup the Slayers campaign, I had a goal of $1500. I was planning on doing a really small print run, and wanted to just cover the costs of the art that I had already commissioned, and the layout work that needed to be done. In fact, before the campaign launched, I was convinced Slayers was going to fit in a zine format. Well, I was wrong about that, and so the campaign was setup to be for a nice, small, paperback RPG.
I gave myself 30 days for the campaign because I thought I was going to need all that time. I had only done one Kickstarter before Slayers, and it was for Score, posted during Zine Quest. Because ZQ was going on, Score had some free "advertising", since everyone was already combing KS for zines. This time, I wanted to give myself as much time as possible to cross the finish line.
Cut to day 1, and the game funds in less than 5 hours. At the time of me writing this, Slayers is sitting at about $5500 raised, and with 3 more weeks left in the campaign.
This first week was wild. There was an explosion of support out the gate, and the campaign has actually maintained a relatively steady rate of growth these last few days. I'm waiting for that inevitable plateau that campaigns feel, because honestly it will be a relief.
I've been posting about Slayers on twitter, trying to get on shows and podcasts, and basically going all out for a week. And it is A LOT. I'm thinking about pumping the brakes on that just a little, to keep myself from burning out, and then going back hard in the final week.
Let's talk about stretch goals. I had always wanted to include a few, to get opportunities to add some art to the book. When those art based stretch goals got unlocked very quickly, I wondered what else to do. Because Slayers thrives on people creating the setting together, I thought it would be fun to bring on some guest writers for the book. So far one has been revealed, Nevyn Holmes, and there is another coming up!
Oh, and let's not forget the hardcover upgrade! I want this to be a really cool book, and giving it a long-lasting hardback cover helps realize that dream. But I'm still keeping it the small size I had always envisioned, A5 size paper, just more protected now. I want the book to be something you can easily carry around and flip through, not a huge tome.
Speaking of, and this relates to stretch goals, I have one more guest author to reveal, and then I think that will be it for stretch goals. There are a few reasons for this.
It is exhausting trying to keep up so many stretch goals!
If I make the book much bigger, it is suddenly going to be super expensive to ship
Eventually, I have to accept the fact that the book is "done"
So here we are, 1 week in and the funding and support has been incredible. We've transformed a game I thought would be a zine, to a nice hardcover, art-filled, ~80 page book.
